Training SEVO Voluteers

Samaritan Emergency Volunteer Organization
Uganda, Africa

Prayers Needed and Answered

Pray ForBackground and Status
Pray for the final steps to complete registration of SEVO as a Non-Governmental Organization. SEVO is still in the process of becoming registered as an NGO, but as an additional and beneficial safeguard, we have just completed registering it as a company with limited guarantee. So SEVO’s name now is officially SEVO International, Ltd.
Pray for God’s provisions for all of SEVO's current needs to help SEVO operate smoothly. Creativity is needed, ways of generating income for office needs, transportation and phone costs. The sales of membership cards are now bringing in some small funding, and the newest districts are adding to that fee in order to be able to purchase land and build their own SEVO offices, rather than renting.

Hannington has been able to do several trainings for a university research group working out of Berkeley, California, on access to health care in rural Uganda. He’s done basic first aid trainings to several groups of motorcycle taxies (boda-bodas) and taught them how to transport injured or ill victims to hospitals or clinics for treatment. They are called Boda Bodas for Life and proudly wear vests with that name on them.

The Boda Bodas for Life trainings has provided some income for SEVO that has enabled us to have our ambulance, which was wrecked last summer, towed into Kampala to a mechanic’s garage. As more income comes in from these trainings, Hannington will have our ambulance repaired. We hope to have it back in action again before too much longer!
Please pray that the sand fileter project will come together as we’ve planned, and that God will provide the needed funds. I am in the process of writing a proposal for our bio-sand water filter project.
Pray that SEVO can instill in its members, through Gospel and Christian ethics teachings, a new sense of morality and pride, and that the Samaritan spirit will permeate every facet of SEVO.

We have made changes in the leadership of SEVO and God has raised up needed administrative helpers, including a ministry called Hope Education Network, a Ugandan ministry for training in Christian ethics in both business and education. SEVO and New Life Center Church are combining leadership, and Pastor David Kasule is becoming the SEVO missions pastor, helping Hannington Sseruga with the spiritual outreach of the SEVO trainings.
Many newer SEVO members need to catch the vision of being volunteers, that the goal of SEVO is to serve needy people. Christian morals, values and ethics are needed in all of Uganda.
Pray for the health of Director Sseruga Hannington Hannington is suffering from high blood pressure. Delegation of his work load has not worked very well, but interestingly, whenever he returns from a training seminar, his blood pressure is lower!
Pray for all SEVO rescuers and trainers, for God to enable them to quickly act in emergency situations, and to have good judgment at all times. Pray for both lives and souls to be saved. SEVO members need to be able to act quickly to triage victims, to deal with bystanders who are often in danger from highway traffic, and to prevent robbery of victims. Trainers need to be able to correctly pass on their learned information and rescue techniques.
For God’s provision for ongoing financial needs for full-time SEVO workers and office costs. The workers are volunteers, and are not paid a salary. However, God needs to provide for their personal expenses in volunteering, such as transportation, phone, etc, as well as the expenses of maintaining offices. Some workers are becoming very creative as they’ve struggled to keep their offices open.We have closed down the offices which have not been functioning well. New districts are planning for buying land and building their own offices, rather than renting.
For God’s provision for completion of SEVO headquarters/training center on the 2 acres of land at Kikunyu village, which was donated by the Muslim Hajji The land was totally undeveloped forest when it was given to us. It has now been cleared. People put up makeshift tents for the conferences we have there. A nice brick latrine and bath has been built, and about 10,000 bricks have been made for putting up another building. This project has been neglected much of this past year, due to the many other conflict issues in SEVO. But in 2008 we plan to expand the local SEVO work, and work on developing this land once again.
For qualified, motivated, honest leadership for the various SEVO stations across Uganda. Most districts are working through the issues of rather weak leadership, as the attitude of most has been that once SEVO got registered at district, and then national, levels, money would begin to pour in. Because of dependency created by international goverment loans and such, Ugandans have learned to look outside for their sustenance, and for easy money. It takes a lot of work for the true concept of volunteerism to take hold and for people to catch the vision of what we’re truly about. We have closed down ineffective or corrupt SEVO centers and are continuing to strive towards Godly ideals in all we do, praying for God to change lives along the way.
